Home Inspection in winter time

The roof, wood deck and the driveway cannot be inspected due to snow covering

A winter like this one that ,hopefully is going to end soon, brings a lot of snow on the building roofs and ground. The problem is that the home inspector is conducting only a visual examination of the property and the defects with the snow covered areas won’t be visible. In many cases the ground is icy and the home inspector won’t be even able to set the ladder in a safe way. According to the International Standards of Practice for Performing a General Home Inspection we (home inspectors) are not required to remove snow. Imagine what it will be that a home inspector will start shoveling a driveway and walkways around the house… I am not saying that is not doable and it’s up to each individual to conduct the inspection the way they want, it’s just that the effort it’s probably not covered by the inspection fee. Of course, there are enough things to be inspected inside the house or condominium and the investment in a home inspection it will still be a good one. The home inspection report will save you money in the end.

It is also a good idea to walk around the home and see if anything catches your eye before the professional home inspector arrives.
All too often, sellers look on the inspection with dread
and buyers think it’s an unnecessary expense. Your home inspector should have the necessary instruments
to detect it, especially if testing is required in your state.
