Radon Testing

Why is radon testing important?

Prolonged exposure to radon is known to highly increase the risk of getting lung cancer in humans. National Cancer Institute states that it is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Studies show that radon causes over 20,000 deaths each year in the United States. The lower the radon level in the home you want to purchase, the lower your family’s risk of getting lung cancer. In conclusion, radon testing during home inspection is a crucial step when purchasing a house.

What is Radon?

It is a radioactive gas that has been found in homes across the United States. Occurring naturally in Earth’s crust, it is invisible, odorless and tasteless. It is the product of the decaying uranium in soil and rocks over time resulting in the release of this carcinogen gas. Radon typically moves up from the ground, into the air and homes through cracks and other openings in the foundation. As a result homes trap radon where it can build up.

Some of the most common ways for radon to enter homes are:

  • Cracks in solid floors
  • Cracks and cavities in walls
  • Gaps in suspended floors and around service pipes
  • Construction joints
  • The water supply
